How high should you hang a horse solarium?

December 8, 2025

The correct installation height of a horse solarium is essential for safe and effective operation.
If a solarium is mounted too low, it can lead to overheating or damage to the mane and skin. If it is mounted too high, the effect of the heat radiation is significantly reduced. Correct adjustment ensures comfort, safety, and even heat distribution.

Guideline for the correct height

At Q-Line, a fixed safety and working distance is applied:

The underside of the solarium must remain at least 50 centimeters above the horse’s withers.

In practice, this means:

  • For an average horse with a withers height of approximately 1.65 meters: an installation height of around 2.15 to 2.25 meters;

  • For larger horses with a withers height between 1.75 and 1.85 meters: an installation height of approximately 2.25 to 2.40 meters.

This distance ensures that the infrared heat is evenly distributed over the body, the temperature remains comfortable, and sufficient air circulation is present between the solarium and the horse.

Adjustable suspension

When a solarium is equipped with an adjustable lift, such as the Q-Line MaXuSS Thera or Q-Line Mercurr, the height can easily be adjusted. This makes it possible to take into account:

  • Different horse sizes;

  • The purpose of the session, such as drying or muscle warming;

  • Personal preferences of the rider or stable owner.

The electric and manual lift systems from Q-Line are equipped with safety limiters. These prevent the solarium from being set too low and contribute to safe use in daily practice.

Important safety rule

The solarium must never hang so low that the horse can touch the unit with its head or ears. Always maintain at least 50 centimeters of free space at the underside, even for the largest horse in the stable.

By following this guideline, you not only prevent overheating but also damage resulting from unexpected movements, such as startle reactions or rearing.
