Why and how do you train a horse’s abdominal muscles?
February 28, 2026
The abdominal muscles play a bigger role than many people think. They work closely together with the back and gluteal muscles. As soon as a horse engages its abdominal muscles, the pelvis tilts slightly and the back lifts. That is exactly what is needed for correct posture and collection.
If the abdominal muscles are insufficiently developed, you often see the opposite: a hollow back, less carrying power, and quicker fatigue.
The foundation: active movement from back to front
You do not train abdominal muscles by “fixing” something at the front, but through activity coming from the hindquarters.
Think about:
- Regular walking and trotting, for example in a Q-Line horse walker
- Working with smooth transitions
- Riding in a posture where the back is able to move freely
As soon as a horse steps well underneath itself and uses its back correctly, the abdominal muscles are automatically engaged.
Exercises that truly make a difference
Both from the ground and under saddle, you can specifically work on improving core strength.
From the ground:- Cavaletti poles or ground poles to stimulate lifting the torso
- Hill work for extra activation of the abdominal and gluteal muscles
- Light belly-lift exercises to encourage the back to round
- Transitions between walk, trot, and canter
- Lateral movements such as shoulder-in and travers
- Short periods of collection
Keep the sessions short and correct. Here, quality is clearly more important than duration.
Strengthening without extra strain
With young or sensitive horses, you want to develop the abdominal muscles without placing excessive strain on the back. An AquaTrainer helps because the water resistance forces the horse to stabilize its core.
A Vitafloor stimulates the deeper muscle layers in the abdomen and back without active loading. This allows strength to be built without unnecessary pressure on the joints or spine.
Recovery makes the difference
Muscles develop during recovery. After training, warmth helps release tension and accelerates recovery. A session under the MaXuSS Thera solarium supports blood circulation and helps keep the abdominal and back muscles supple.
