How do you train a horse’s back muscles?
March 6, 2026
The back forms the connection between the forehand and hindquarters and carries the rider’s weight. When the back is strong and supple, a horse moves more easily, with better balance and less tension.
A healthy back is lightly lifted and elastic — not hollow or stiff.
Why back training is important
The back muscles work together with the abdominal and gluteal muscles. Only when this cooperation is correct can a horse lift its back and properly carry the rider’s weight.
If the back is too weak, you often see:
- A hollow topline
- Less suppleness, especially in canter
- Sensitivity when touched or saddled
The foundation: movement from back to front
You do not train back muscles by forcing a posture, but through correct movement.
It is important that the horse:
- Steps actively underneath itself
- Releases the back
- Moves in a relaxed topline
This can be achieved with:
- Calm walking and trotting, for example in a Q-Line horse walker
- Lunging or groundwork with light, honest contact
- Plenty of transitions and changes of tempo
Short, active sessions work better than long sessions without impulsion.
Exercises that strengthen the back
You can train specifically both from the ground and under saddle.
From the ground:- Cavaletti exercises to activate both the back and abdominal muscles
- Hill work for strength and coordination
- Belly-lift exercises to encourage the back to round
- Transitions for greater carrying power
- Lateral movements for suppleness
- Short periods of collected canter
Work in short sessions and allow the horse to relax in between.
Strengthening without rider weight
With young horses or during rehabilitation, training without additional strain on the back is important. An AquaTrainer stimulates core engagement through water resistance.
A Vitafloor activates the deep stabilizing muscles. This allows the horse to develop strength without overloading the spine.
Recovery keeps the back supple
Relaxation after training is essential. Warmth helps release tension and supports recovery.
A session under the MaXuSS Thera solarium stimulates blood circulation and helps keep the back supple, reducing the risk of stiffness and muscle soreness.
